OHSU Vista Pavilion Hospital Expansion

OHSU’s biggest hospital expansion in a generation is open. The Vista Pavilion, a 14-story, 530,000-square-foot inpatient tower on Portland’s Marquam Hill, welcomed its first patients in April 2026 after Skanska delivered the roughly $650 million project on time and on budget. It reshapes adult cancer care in Oregon and eases a chronic bed crunch at the state’s academic medical center.

Project Scope

The building adds 128 inpatient beds at opening and, once fully fit out, expands OHSU Hospital’s capacity by about a third. NBBJ led the design; Skanska USA was the general contractor, working with Stantec on MEP, KPFF on civil, MKA on structural, and Mayer/Reed on landscape. Building on a steep, active hillside campus forced heavy use of prefabrication, modular assembly, and just-in-time delivery, and three skybridges tie the new tower into the existing hospital so patients and staff move between them without going outside.

Why It Matters

Marquam Hill is one of the hardest hospital sites in the country to build on: steep grade, tight footprint, and a facility that has to keep running around the clock next door. Delivering a 14-story tower there without disrupting care is the real achievement. For patients, the payoff is capacity, more beds, consolidated cancer services, and room to grow, in a region that had been turning away transfers for lack of space.
