Pile driving near 700 South is the first thing West Point residents will see. Granite Construction moves into full production the first week of August on the SR-177 extension, carrying the West Davis Corridor north from SR-193 to 1800 North.
Project Scope
Granite’s contract runs about $116.9 million; UDOT puts the overall extension at roughly $225 million. The alignment covers 2.5 miles by UDOT’s measure and includes nine new bridges, two pedestrian crossings, three noise walls approved by resident ballot, roughly 70,000 tons of asphalt and more than a million cubic yards of borrow.
The lane count changed after the environmental work was done. The 2017 Environmental Impact Statement studied one lane in each direction. What’s being built is four lanes, two each way. The alignment itself didn’t move — FHWA’s September 2017 Record of Decision selected Alternative B1 and that’s what’s under construction — but growth forced the cross-section wider before a shovel hit dirt. The project also extends the Emigrant Trail from 1300 North to the Weber County line. Granite is self-supplying aggregate from its Wells Pit in Willard and asphalt from its West Haven plant.
Preliminary clearing and fencing ran through July; utility relocations were done in 2025. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with weekends as needed.
Why It Matters
The parent facility, the 16-mile West Davis Highway from Farmington to West Point, opened in January 2024 with more than 10 miles of trails alongside it. This extension is the next segment of a build-out UDOT has been staging since the EIS process started in 2010.
The demand case is blunt. UDOT projects that by 2050 the number of homes in western Davis and Weber counties will rise 74%. “This project represents an important step in continuing the buildout of the West Davis Corridor, improving access and mobility for the growing northern Davis County region,” said Jason Klaumann, a Granite regional vice president.
A separate state study running through late 2026 is evaluating pushing SR-177 further north to roughly 4000 South in West Haven. That segment is unfunded.
