Granite Construction is one of the country’s largest heavy-civil contractors, founded in 1922 and headquartered in Watsonville, California. The publicly traded firm builds highways, bridges, tunnels and site work, and runs its own aggregates and asphalt materials business, a vertical setup that few competitors match. Granite has ridden the current infrastructure and data center wave to a record backlog above $7 billion, lifting its revenue guidance even through a weather-hit quarter. With operations across the western and southern United States, Granite sits at the scale where a single company’s order book is a useful read on the whole heavy-civil market.
Granite’s own site organizes its work into two operating groups rather than a single generalist label: a construction segment split into transportation, water and wastewater, specialty and federal work, delivered in some cases through collaborative delivery methods, and a separate materials segment that mines and produces aggregate, asphalt concrete, liquid asphalt and recycled materials.
The materials business is not limited to California. Granite’s site lists quarry and production locations in Alaska, Arizona, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington in addition to California, reflecting a materials footprint that extends well beyond the company’s corporate office at 585 West Beach Street in Watsonville.
On its progressive design-build page, Granite describes the delivery method it increasingly uses on public infrastructure work: the owner selects a team based on qualifications or best value rather than lowest cost, followed by a two-phase process in which phase one produces a budget-level design and phase two completes the design and construction.
The company has continued acquiring specialty and regional contractors. In 2026 it announced the acquisition of Kenny Seng Construction, a Provo, Utah-based infrastructure construction firm that Granite’s site describes as working both as a general contractor and as a specialty subcontractor for long-standing customers. Granite also published its 2025 sustainability report, covering safety and health, community engagement, ethics and compliance, energy and resilience, and waste management.
Industry recognition has been consistent in the highways category specifically: Granite’s site states it ranked No. 1 in Highways on Engineering News-Record’s 2025 Top Contractors List, marking the fifth consecutive year it has held that ranking. The company maintains active Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, X and YouTube accounts linked from its site footer.
Granite’s site also maintains a dedicated credit application page under its materials navigation, letting contractors and buyers apply for a trade account before ordering aggregate or asphalt, and a separate Our Companies section for the specialty and regional brands operating under the Granite umbrella.
