Cypress Creek Energy and Google turned dirt on July 15 in Wilson, Arkansas, on what the partners say will be the largest solar project in the United States. Steel River Energy Center sits in Mississippi County, and its scale reads more like a power plant than a solar farm.
Project Scope
The first two phases will add 1.6 GW of solar generation and 1.9 GWh of battery storage to the local grid. Built out across three phases, the center reaches 2.5 GW of solar and 2.9 GWh of storage by 2029, enough to power more than 315,000 Arkansas homes a year. Cypress Creek is the developer; Google has signed a power purchase agreement for the output of the first two phases, the anchor that made the financing work.
Why It Matters
Big tech’s electricity appetite is now shaping where and how fast utility-scale renewables get built. Pairing solar with storage at this size is the part worth watching: batteries let the plant push power into the evening peak instead of dumping midday surplus. Mississippi County has spent a decade recasting itself as a steel and clean-energy hub, and a project this large plants a durable flag in the Arkansas Delta.
