A former Queens junkyard district is turning into the largest all-affordable housing project New York has built in 40 years. The Willets Point redevelopment will deliver 2,500 affordable homes, a 250-room hotel, a school, and a soccer stadium for New York City FC, all on land beside Citi Field.
Project Scope
Phase 1 finished in 2026 with two 12-story buildings holding 880 affordable units, and a senior building broke ground the same year. Phase 2 adds the remaining 1,400 homes plus Etihad Park, a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium on track to open in 2027. The Queens Development Group, a Related Companies and Sterling Equities venture, leads the work with NYCFC.
Why It Matters
Willets Point pairs the city’s biggest affordable-housing push in a generation with its first privately financed major stadium in years, on land that was contaminated and largely off the tax rolls. It’s a test of whether housing and a sports venue can anchor a new neighborhood from scratch. For another big New York residential project, see 5 World Trade Center. More at Willets Point.
