Sacramento has its first permitted 3D-printed home, and the permit may matter more than the print. K4K Construction, using RIC Robotics’ autonomous printing system, finished the concrete structure of a 1,200-square-foot accessory dwelling unit in about 12 days, after working with the city to build a code-compliant path for printed residential construction.
Project Scope
The ADU sits on a single-family lot and was built for the in-laws of K4K founder David Gonzales, a detail that says something about where the technology is: real, occupied, small. The harder work happened at the permit counter. K4K and the City of Sacramento worked out how a printed concrete wall meets California’s seismic requirements, the kind of precedent that lets the next printed house skip the invention. The structure now moves on to roofing, mechanical, electrical and plumbing, finishes, and final inspections.
Why It Matters
3D-printed construction has plenty of demo homes and not many permits. A city signing off on a printed house, on the record, with a seismic pathway, is the thing that turns a novelty into a delivery method. California’s push for accessory dwelling units gives the technique a natural first market: small, repetitive, code-heavy structures where speed and labor savings actually move the numbers.
