University Health is extending hospital care to San Antonio’s fast-growing South Side. The $550 million Palo Alto hospital, a five-story facility with 166 inpatient beds, sits on the University Health Palo Alto campus across from Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
Project Scope
A Turner joint venture with San Antonio-based Byrne Construction Services is building the hospital, which broke ground in January 2024 and is designed to open in 2027. The program includes a 24/7 emergency department, labor and delivery suites, a neonatal intensive care unit, operating rooms, and radiology and laboratory services. The nearby Vida outpatient building, opened in late 2025, was the campus’s first structure.
Why It Matters
The South Side has long traveled north for inpatient and emergency care. A full-service hospital on the Palo Alto campus shortens that trip and anchors a growing medical district next to a public university. For University Health, it extends a public hospital system’s reach into a part of the county where population growth has outpaced local capacity.
