Pagidipati Children's Hospital at St. Joseph's

BayCare has started construction on a freestanding replacement for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Tampa, a project expected to run past $650 million. It carries the name of the Pagidipati family, whose $50 million gift ranks among the largest philanthropic donations in Tampa Bay history.

Robins & Morton is construction manager. Stantec, which absorbed Page, leads design. The hospital is scheduled to open in 2030.

Project Scope

Replacing a children’s hospital rather than renovating one usually comes down to floor-to-floor height and column spacing. Pediatric care has moved toward larger patient rooms that accommodate a family staying overnight, and toward imaging and procedural suites that need more structure and more mechanical capacity than a 1970s or 1980s bed tower can carry. At some point the retrofit costs more than the rebuild and delivers a worse building.

The exterior design leans into the fact that its patients are children: a multicolor facade with a dynamic lighting system programmed to shift with seasons and holidays. That’s a facade engineering problem as much as an aesthetic one, since exterior lighting integrated into cladding has to survive Gulf Coast humidity, salt exposure and hurricane-rated wind loads without becoming a maintenance liability.

BayCare first showed renderings in January 2026. Construction started later in the year.

Why It Matters

Health systems have kept building through a stretch when almost every other nonresidential sector slowed, and pediatric facilities are a specific piece of that. The economics are unusual. Children’s hospitals rarely pencil on payer mix alone, which is why philanthropy shows up in the capital stack in a way it doesn’t for an adult bed tower. A $50 million naming gift is doing real work inside a $650 million budget.

For the Tampa market, this is one of the largest healthcare capital commitments on the board, and it lands in a region where population growth has been running well ahead of hospital bed additions for a decade.
