National Medal of Honor Museum — Arlington

The National Medal of Honor Museum lifts its main exhibition hall three stories into the air on five stone-clad columns, a structural move meant to read as courage made physical. It opened March 22, 2025, in Arlington’s Entertainment District, steps from Globe Life Field and AT&T Stadium. Rafael Vinoly designed it before his death in 2023, making the 102,000-square-foot building one of his last completed works. Linbeck Group built it.

Project Scope
The museum stacks a solid, monumental upper volume over an open ground-level plaza and reflecting pool. Those five canted columns carry the elevated galleries, which hold roughly 31,000 square feet of exhibits covering more than 160 years of Medal of Honor recipients. Crews poured heavy concrete cores and hung the cantilevered floors so the hall appears to float. Southland Industries handled the mechanical systems. The roughly $270 million project ran on private donations, and the foundation took no federal money for construction. Work started in early 2022 and wrapped in time for the March 2025 grand opening.

Why It Matters
Most civic museums sit heavy on the ground. This one does the opposite, and the engineering behind that gesture is the story. Suspending a full gallery block on so few supports meant tight coordination between the structural team and the concrete crews, with load paths that left little room for error. For Arlington, the building anchors a growing cultural district next to its sports venues and gives the city a national draw that isn’t tied to a game day. It’s also a marker for privately funded institutional work at a time when many museums lean on public dollars. The result is a piece of architecture that argues its meaning through structure, not signage, and gives a hard-to-tell American story a permanent home in North Texas.
