Altering a Grade I-listed building is difficult. Altering a Grade I-listed postmodern building whose surviving co-author is publicly objecting is something else. The Sainsbury Wing, Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates’ 1991 extension, is now the National Gallery’s main public entrance, and getting it there was the contentious centrepiece of NG200, the gallery’s £85 million bicentenary building programme.
Project Scope
Selldorf Architects, working with heritage architects Purcell, enlarged the ground-floor foyer by roughly 60 percent, removed non-structural columns, and added two new double-height volumes east and west of the entrance vestibule. The wing’s dark reflective entrance glazing came out and clear glass went in, opening the foyer onto Trafalgar Square. The compression-and-release sequence up to the grand staircase, the part of Venturi Scott Brown’s design everyone agreed mattered, was preserved. Arup covered structural, MEP, sustainability and acoustic engineering. Gardiner & Theobald ran project management and cost. Sir Robert McAlpine built it, with Blue Sky Building on construction management. The wider programme also delivered a new Research Centre, a Supporters’ House inside the Wilkins Building, and reworked public realm. Work started on site in March 2023 and the wing opened to the public on 10 May 2025.
Why It Matters
Heritage bodies and Denise Scott Brown herself objected to the alterations, and the argument was not really about glass. It was about whether a building from 1991 is old enough to be treated as a document. Listed-building consent said it was, and then permitted the changes anyway. Design teams working on late-twentieth-century listed stock now have a live precedent for what a consenting authority will accept, which is more useful than any amount of guidance.
