Selldorf Architects

Selldorf Architects is a New York architecture practice founded by Annabelle Selldorf in 1988 and based at 860 Broadway in Manhattan. The firm is known for museum, gallery and cultural work, along with residential and institutional buildings, and it is a certified Women’s Business Enterprise. Selldorf was design architect on the $330 million renovation and expansion of The Frick Collection, which reopened in April 2025 after taking the campus from 178,000 to 196,000 square feet and opening the mansion’s second floor to the public for the first time. The practice also led the Sainsbury Wing reworking at London’s National Gallery, completed in 2025. Its work extends beyond New York to London, Paris, Toronto and Arles.

Two recent selections extend the museum record. Selldorf Architects was chosen alongside STUDIOS Architecture and BASE Paysagiste for the Louvre’s Nouvelle Renaissance project in Paris, and the Clark Art Institute has revealed the office’s design for a new Aso O. Tavitian Wing. In Toronto, the Province of Ontario has committed $35 million toward the Art Gallery of Ontario expansion the firm is designing.

Older cultural work keeps collecting recognition. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego received an AIA San Diego Legacy Award, and the Frick Collection project has taken several major design awards since reopening.

Away from museums the office runs three other portfolios. Commercial work includes an entertainment company headquarters and a project at Chateau Haut-Brion, which the firm files under both commercial and cultural. Residential work spans One Domino Square and a house at Hampton Bays. Gallery design is effectively its own category, with David Zwirner’s 20th Street building among the best known.

Annabelle Selldorf’s work also reaches past architecture: Vica, her furniture line, has opened a showroom at the New York Design Center.

The practice describes its design ethos as rooted in humanism — designing for the individual experience at every scale, and treating a building as completed by the people who eventually use it.

The studio is at 860 Broadway at Union Square, New York, NY 10003, on 212.219.9571. General and press enquiries go to info@selldorf.com, new business to lisa@selldorf.com, and portfolios to jobs@selldorf.com as a single PDF no larger than 10 MB.
