Montclair State University Interdisciplinary Science Building

Montclair State University will triple its on-campus science lab space with one building. The university broke ground July 21, 2026 on a $120 million Interdisciplinary Science Building, a 110,000-square-foot HOK-designed facility set to open at the start of the 2028-2029 academic year. New Jersey’s Office of the Secretary of Higher Education is covering $60 million of the cost through a capital facilities grant.

Project Scope

The program is built around teaching and research labs for expanded chemistry, physics and cross-disciplinary science work, plus technology-driven classrooms, faculty workspaces and student collaboration areas. Three elements set it apart from a standard science block.

The Imaginarium is a scalable, reconfigurable space for data analysis and immersive visualization, a university-wide priority rather than a single department’s. An indoor-outdoor classroom, the first on the Montclair campus, opens onto an event plaza with configurable seating. And a full fourth-floor zone is being left adaptable for a corporate research partner, betting that a company will pay to put R&D staff inside a campus research environment.

The building targets LEED Silver. Sustainability features include rooftop solar, a native rain garden, a bioswale and a dry stream bed for stormwater. A rooftop terrace faces the Manhattan skyline about 15 miles east.

Why It Matters

Montclair graduates more minority STEM students than any other institution in New Jersey, and it’s an R2 university openly chasing R1 classification. Research expenditures hit $45.43 million in 2025. Lab capacity is the constraint on both goals, which is why the square footage math here matters more than the price tag.

The delivery model is worth watching too. Designing a floor plate for an unnamed industry tenant is a calculated risk. It only pays if a partner shows up before fit-out, and it pushes MEP and structural decisions toward flexibility that costs money up front. Plenty of universities talk about corporate research partnerships; few build the shell before signing one.

For New Jersey’s higher-ed construction market, the $60 million state grant is the headline number. Capital facilities funding has been the swing factor in whether these projects move, and public institutions across the state are watching how quickly this one converts a grant into steel.
