The HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital inpatient tower in Green Bay is going up on ground the hospital cleared itself. Crews spent most of 2025 and 2026 taking apart the 1958 North Building, and on Sept. 23, 2026, Hospital Sisters Health System broke ground on a six-story tower in its place.
The ICU number is what stands out. St. Mary’s has eight intensive care beds today. The new tower takes it to 36, more than four times the current count, and adds over 100 private patient rooms for medical-surgical and intensive care.
Project Scope
HGA designed the tower. C.D. Smith Construction is construction manager and says the project came in within budget. The building adds two cardiovascular operating rooms and a cardiac procedural room alongside the inpatient floors.
The tower is the largest piece of a broader campus overhaul. That work includes a new main entrance, more parking, security upgrades and a new kitchen and dining area. HSHS expects the St. Mary’s revitalization, tower included, to wrap in 2028.
Anyone tracking waste diversion should look at the demolition. Concrete from the fall 2025 demolition was crushed and is going back in as fill under the new tower. Medical equipment and furnishings from the North Building went to Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity instead of a landfill.
Why It Matters
HSHS is putting about $270 million into its two Green Bay hospitals, St. Mary’s and St. Vincent, a program it announced in March 2025. The system hasn’t broken out the tower’s share. St. Vincent, across town, is getting its own work, including a $17.2 million NICU renovation.
The bigger story is the shift in what St. Mary’s does. Going from eight ICU beds to 36 and adding cardiovascular ORs repositions St. Mary’s toward higher-acuity cardiac and critical care. That’s a lot of new capacity to staff, and hiring, not concrete, may set the real pace of the 2028 opening.
For the builders, it’s a tight urban hospital site with an operating campus wrapped around it. The North Building sat apart from the main hospital, which helped. The new tower still has to tie back into a working facility.
