Avon has grown faster than its hospital, and Cleveland Clinic is spending $340 million to catch up. The health system will nearly double its Nagel Road campus in the Cleveland suburb, expanding both Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Family Health Center.
Project Scope
The plan adds a new inpatient bed tower, more operating rooms, a larger emergency department, and additional lab and imaging space at the hospital. The Jacobs health center gains roughly 90 exam rooms and new cancer services, including radiation oncology. A new parking garage rounds out the work for patients, physicians, and staff. Construction runs through 2028.
Why It Matters
Cleveland Clinic points to a more than 40% jump in surgeries and admissions at Avon since 2017, and a nearly 75% rise in imaging. That’s the kind of demand that doesn’t track the business cycle, which is exactly why health systems keep building through soft markets. Suburban campuses like Avon also let a big system shift routine surgical and outpatient volume off its crowded main campus. The bed tower is the tell: adding licensed inpatient capacity is a long, expensive commitment owners only make when the population math is convincing.
