The old bridge was never supposed to last this long. Opened in 1952 and designed for a fraction of the traffic it now carries, the I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge has sat near the top of Louisiana’s structurally deficient list for years. Crews broke ground on its $2.3 billion replacement on April 29, 2026. The new crossing is due in 2031.
Project Scope
Calcasieu Bridge Partners, a Plenary Americas-led consortium, holds the concession. Design and construction run through a 50-50 joint venture of Sacyr and Acciona. The work covers more than the bridge itself: roughly 5.5 miles of corridor reconstruction along I-10, three rebuilt interchanges, a local road raised to eliminate an at-grade rail crossing, and demolition of the existing span once traffic shifts.
Louisiana is funding about $1.2 billion of the total with state and federal money. The balance comes from bonds repaid out of toll revenue, which makes this the state’s first tolled interstate crossing in modern memory and the political flashpoint of the whole deal. Southwest Louisiana drivers have been arguing about the tolls since before the ink dried.
Why It Matters
I-10 through Lake Charles is a national freight artery. It links Houston’s petrochemical complex to the Gulf Coast LNG corridor and on to New Orleans, and the existing bridge is a chokepoint with a 6% grade, no shoulders, and a crash rate that speaks for itself. Every hurricane evacuation in the region funnels across it.
The project also tells you where U.S. bridge finance is heading. Federal formula money alone was never going to cover a $2.3 billion replacement in a parish of 200,000 people. Louisiana chose tolls and private equity instead of waiting another decade for a grant that might not come. Other states with a signature bridge problem and a thin capital program are watching how the toll politics play out.
