Austin has spent years arguing about light rail. Now it’s buying it. The Austin Transit Partnership holds federal environmental clearance and a first design-build contract for Phase 1 of Project Connect, a roughly 9.8-mile starter line that would run surface trains from the University of Texas south through downtown.
Project Scope
Phase 1 lays down about 9.8 miles of surface-running light rail with 15 stations, branching from 38th Street near UT through the capitol district and downtown, then splitting toward East Riverside and South Congress. Early design-build work went to Austin Rail Constructors, a joint venture of Stacy Witbeck and Sundt. Phase 1 carries an estimated $4.5 billion to $4.8 billion price tag inside a $7.1 billion program, with the agency seeking federal funding for roughly half.
Why It Matters
Austin is one of the largest U.S. cities with no urban rail, and its growth has long outrun its roads. The Federal Transit Administration’s Record of Decision in January cleared the way to buy property and let contracts, moving the plan from vote to shovels. Construction is targeted to begin in 2027 and run through 2033, threading the fastest-growing job centers in the region.
