A Bit About Zerluma Aluminum Recycling Plant — Mission, Texas
Mission, Texas has spent a decade trying to land heavy industry instead of distribution sheds. On July 28, 2026, it finally got one. Zerluma broke ground on a $50 million aluminum recycling plant, a 98,000-square-foot secondary smelting and casting facility on the city’s industrial edge, about ten miles from the Anzalduas international crossing.
Project Scope
The plant will take post-consumer and industrial aluminum scrap and return it to cast product. That process chain drives the building: a scrap receiving and sorting area with heavy floor loading, a melt hall with furnaces and the structural and ventilation work that goes with them, a casting bay, and an emissions control train that has to satisfy TCEQ permitting for a metals operation this close to a growing residential edge.
Melt-hall construction is its own discipline. Refractory-lined furnace foundations, high-temperature exhaust, and a roof structure designed for thermal load and crane rails put the shell closer to a foundry than a warehouse, even at 98,000 square feet. Land acquisition and construction together account for roughly $7 million of the announced investment, with equipment carrying the balance, which tells you where the real complexity sits.
Why It Matters
Secondary aluminum takes about 5% of the energy that primary smelting needs, and that math has gotten more attractive as U.S. tariffs pushed imported metal prices up sharply. Aluminum mill shape prices ran up roughly a third year over year through early 2026, and the 50% metals tariff regime has made domestic recycled supply a hedge rather than a discount option. Plants like this one are the supply-side answer to the input-cost pressure contractors have been absorbing on curtain wall, storefront, and mechanical packages.
The location matters too. The Rio Grande Valley has plenty of maquiladora-adjacent scrap flow and very little processing capacity, so material has historically moved north or south for melting. Keeping it local shortens the loop and gives the region something it has been short of: industrial jobs that aren’t tied to freight volume.
For builders in South Texas, the project is a useful signal. Industrial work in the Valley has been dominated by cross-dock and cold storage. A furnace job is a different bid, and the local subcontractor base for refractory, high-temperature mechanical and process piping will be tested by it.
