Sublime Systems is building the first commercial plant for a cement that skips the kiln. The roughly $150 million facility in Holyoke, Massachusetts, will make low-carbon cement at kiloton scale using an electrochemical process instead of the fossil-fired furnaces that make ordinary portland cement one of the largest industrial sources of carbon.
Project Scope
The plant targets up to 30,000 tons a year of Sublime’s cement, produced at ambient temperature by pulling reactive minerals out of raw feedstocks with electricity rather than heat. The U.S. Department of Energy backed the project with an award of up to $87 million, layered with a clean-energy tax credit, to help move the technology from pilot to a first-of-a-kind commercial line.
Why It Matters
Cement is responsible for roughly 8% of global carbon emissions, and most of it comes from the chemistry and heat of the kiln, not just the fuel. A process that removes both is one of the few credible paths to deep cuts. Holyoke is the proof point: whether an electrochemical cement can hold spec, hit cost, and run reliably at commercial volume. Early adopters, including several large contractors, are already lined up to test the output on real projects.
