Eli Lilly is planting one of its largest new plants in northern Alabama. The company’s $6 billion active pharmaceutical ingredient facility in Huntsville will make small-molecule synthetic and peptide medicines, including orforglipron, Lilly’s oral GLP-1 drug.
Project Scope
Construction begins in 2026 with completion anticipated by 2032. The site adds about 3,450 jobs, including 450 permanent positions for engineers, scientists and technicians, and roughly 3,000 construction jobs at peak. Huntsville was chosen from more than 300 candidate sites, helped by its bioscience base and proximity to the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
Why It Matters
The plant is the third of four U.S. manufacturing sites Lilly has committed to, part of more than $50 billion in domestic capital spending since 2020. For Huntsville, already an aerospace and defense hub, it broadens the industrial base into life sciences. Producing active ingredients domestically also reduces the import exposure that tariffs and geopolitics keep testing.
