Bechtel holds a $4.69 billion contract to expand Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass liquefaction terminal in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Cheniere announced the award in May 2026.
Project Scope
The work adds liquefaction capacity at an operating LNG export terminal on the Gulf Coast. Publicly confirmed detail on train count and configuration is limited at this stage, but the contract value places it among the largest single energy EPC awards in the United States this year.
Bechtel has served as contractor across both of Cheniere’s export sites, so the expansion starts from an engineering and procurement baseline already proven against the same owner’s standards. That continuity is part of why these awards keep landing with one contractor rather than going to open competition, and it matters more than it sounds: liquefaction trains are equipment-led jobs where the schedule is set by compressor, exchanger and turbine deliveries, and a contractor with existing vendor slots starts ahead.
Expanding a terminal that is already exporting also constrains the site. Construction laydown, marine access and tie-ins have to work around cargo loading and an operating plant, which is a different problem from the greenfield builds that characterised the first U.S. LNG wave.
Why It Matters
The award came while Bechtel was finishing Corpus Christi Stage 3 in Gregory, Texas, where it turned over the seventh and final liquefaction train on 28 August 2026 and lifted Cheniere’s production capacity above 56 million tonnes per annum. Added to NextDecade’s Rio Grande project, Bechtel now holds more than $30 billion of announced U.S. LNG work, with Texas and Louisiana as the anchors.
The demand behind these decisions tracks security of supply more than spot gas prices. Disruption to tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz has pushed buyers toward cargoes that avoid contested water, and Gulf Coast liquefaction is the main beneficiary of that shift. Security-of-supply arguments do not unwind in a quarter, which is why this backlog looks more durable than a commodity-price cycle would suggest.
