American Express broke ground on 2 World Trade Center on July 9, 2026, starting the last major office tower at the rebuilt World Trade Center site after a 25-year wait.
Project Scope
The nearly 2-million-square-foot skyscraper will serve as American Express’s new headquarters, relocating about 10,000 employees from 200 Vesey Street. Foster + Partners leads the design with AAI Architects as Architect of Record, and Turner Construction is building the tower’s core and shell for developer Silverstein Properties.
Why It Matters
The 2 WTC site sat as a stump-and-podium placeholder for two decades while tenants and financing came and went. A committed anchor tenant finally makes it real. Completing the tower closes out the original master plan for the site and, in a soft office market, stands out as a rare ground-up Manhattan headquarters getting built rather than shelved.
