Sacramento’s Railyards district is getting a 20,000-seat stadium, and after a decade of stops and restarts, steel is finally coming. Sacramento Republic FC named Moorefield Construction as general contractor in April 2026, infrastructure work across the 31-acre site started that same month, and vertical construction follows later this year.
It’ll be the largest outdoor sports and entertainment venue in the region when it opens in 2028.
Project Scope
MANICA leads design with House & Robertson Architects as architect of record. Lund Construction is handling site infrastructure ahead of the stadium build, and Pegasus Development is serving as owner’s representative. Moorefield brings close to 70 years of West Coast hospitality and entertainment work, including renovations at the A’s ballpark and Sacramento City College’s Hughes Stadium.
The Railyards site is a former Southern Pacific maintenance yard, and that’s the defining constraint. Sites like it come with a century of industrial fill, buried foundations and remediation obligations, and the infrastructure package running now is largely about resolving those before a stadium sits on top. Splitting site work and vertical construction between two contractors is a reasonable response: the risks are different and so are the trades.
The stadium sits on the ancestral lands of the Wilton Rancheria, a named project partner.
Why It Matters
Reported project cost has been cited around $252 million, though the current hard construction contract value hasn’t been separately disclosed. Sacramento’s stadium effort was originally tied to an MLS expansion bid that collapsed in 2021 when the lead investor withdrew, and the club has spent the years since rebuilding the financing without that anchor.
Getting from a dead MLS bid to a signed GC and a mobilized site is the part of stadium development nobody covers. It also unlocks the broader Railyards redevelopment, a downtown infill district that has been mostly renderings for twenty years.
