A Bit About Lenovo Center Renovation, Raleigh
Raleigh’s 1999 arena is getting $300 million of work without a single dark season. The Lenovo Center renovation is being built in summer bursts during the hockey off-season, and the first two rounds are already in use.
The Centennial Authority owns the building and controls the money, which comes from debt backed by hotel occupancy and prepared food and beverage taxes collected in Wake County and Raleigh. That public commitment was tied to a 20-year lease extension with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2023. Gensler and LS3P are the architects. A T.A. Loving, Blum and Metcon team is construction manager, and CAA ICON is managing the project.
Project Scope
Summer 2025 delivered the revenue pieces first: a view bar on the third level, bunker suites tucked under the lower bowl and a multipurpose room at arena level.
Summer 2026 was the invasive one. During an eight-week closure, crews pulled every seat in the lower bowl and installed new 19-inch chairs, narrowed the aisles and cut the hockey press box by at least two-thirds. The reclaimed space adds roughly 700 seats for hockey and slightly fewer for basketball, WRAL reported. New boards around the ice, speakers, a WiFi system and another grab-and-go concession area went in at the same time. The building reopened September 15.
That’s about $100 million of the budget. The remaining $200 million is the part fans will see from the parking lot. Plans shown in April 2026 call for a new exterior and grand lobby, a year-round beer hall and restaurant on the south side, a larger team store, a rebuilt arena club, and renovated concourses and restrooms on the first two levels. The authority’s board still has to settle the final list. A vote is expected by the end of 2026.
Why It Matters
Mid-life arena renovations have become the default alternative to a billion-dollar replacement, and this one shows the usual tradeoffs. Sequencing the premium product first gets revenue flowing early. It also means the least glamorous work (restrooms, concourses, circulation) competes for what’s left of a fixed budget, and the building’s public face comes last.
The timeline has drifted, too. CAA ICON’s project page lists a 2027 completion, while WRAL reported in August 2026 that the full program is expected to run through summer 2028. That year matters: the arena is booked for the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds in 2028.
For the trades, the pattern is set. A summer window measured in weeks, a fixed reopening date, and $200 million still to place.
