Chicago hasn’t built a soccer-specific stadium inside the city before. That changes on the Chicago River.
Chicago Fire FC broke ground on a privately funded 22,000-seat stadium anchoring The 78, Related Midwest’s mixed-use district on a long-vacant 62-acre parcel in the South Loop. Club owner Joe Mansueto is paying for the roughly $750 million venue himself, sparing the city the stadium-subsidy fight that has stalled other teams.
Project Scope
The stadium sits at the center of Phase 1 of The 78, a planned neighborhood of housing, offices and public riverwalk. The bowl is drawn tight to the pitch for atmosphere, with a targeted opening for the 2028 MLS season.
Why It Matters
A private check for a downtown stadium is rare right now, and it jump-starts a district that has struggled to get vertical since the site was cleared. Land the venue on schedule and Related Midwest gets an anchor to market the rest of The 78 around.
