The shovels came out Wednesday. Detroit City FC broke ground July 15 on AlumniFi Field, a 15,000-seat soccer stadium at Michigan Avenue and 20th Street in Southwest Detroit, with Mayor Mary Sheffield and a few hundred supporters on hand. Construction runs about $153 million; the full mixed-use development, including a 421-space parking structure and a 76-unit apartment building, comes to $198 million.
Who’s building AlumniFi Field
Barton Malow is the general contractor. HOK is designing the stadium alongside local firm ROSSETTI, with Ferndale’s Disbrow Iannuzzi Architects handling roughly 170,000 square feet of interior space, including concourses, suites and team facilities. The stadium rises on the site of the former Southwest Detroit Hospital, a long-vacant parcel wedged between the Corktown and Mexicantown neighborhoods.
What the new stadium changes for the club
Detroit City currently plays at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, which seats about 8,000. AlumniFi Field nearly doubles that and gives the club a downtown-adjacent home it controls. The city signed off last fall on a $2 million community benefits agreement and a tax subsidy, and local officials peg the annual economic impact at around $25 million. Opening is set for spring 2028, ahead of that USL Championship season. For a club built on supporter culture, the bet is that a purpose-built ground turns matchday energy into year-round revenue.
