Built Robotics Teams With Penn Engineers to Make Autonomous Excavators ‘Provably Safe’

Autonomous machines already dig on real jobsites. Proving they won’t hurt anyone is the harder part.

Built Robotics said it’s working with Penn Engineering’s xLAB, the university’s Safe Autonomous Systems Lab, to move its equipment past software that simply reacts toward systems that can be mathematically verified as safe. The goal is autonomy that reliably detects and protects people around heavy machines, not just avoids obstacles after the fact.

Most jobsite autonomy today runs on sensors and rules: see a person, stop. Provably safe control aims higher, using formal methods to guarantee the machine stays inside safe bounds no matter what it hits.
