DBR Engineering Consultants

DBR Engineering Consultants is a Houston MEP engineering firm founded in 1972. It designs mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and also does building commissioning, integrated technology and security consulting. The firm says it has more than 200 people across eight offices in Texas and New Mexico, with leadership split between Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin. Its markets include healthcare, higher education, K-12, government, hospitality and multifamily, mission critical, manufacturing and commercial mixed-use work. DBR’s headquarters sits on Westlake Park Boulevard in west Houston. On FLAMA, the music and arts charter school OMA is building inside part of Houston’s 1930s Folgers coffee plant, DBR is the MEP engineer.

Commissioning is the service that says the most about how this firm is structured. Its commissioning agents are described as fully independent, handling system start-up and validation as a separate service line — meaning the firm can be hired to verify systems it did not design, and that an owner engaging it for commissioning is not simply paying the designer to grade its own work.

Integrated technology is the second distinguishing piece. Security and low-voltage design is a defined practice, deliberately coordinated with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing disciplines and with the architectural features, rather than being bid out as a separate scope after the ceiling plan is set. The practice area leader for technology holds the RCDD telecommunications design designation.

The organizational detail worth noting is that each discipline has a named technical lead. Practice Area Leaders are published separately for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology, so a question about a plumbing detail has an identifiable owner. The plumbing practice leader holds both CPD and ASSE 6060 credentials.

Specialist directors sit alongside those leads: a Director of Sustainability holding LEED AP BD+C, a Director of BIM, a Director of Construction Administration, a Director of Healthcare, and a dedicated Healthcare Practice Leader with the HFDP healthcare design credential. A Director of Construction Administration is a telling role for an engineering firm to staff — it means someone owns what happens after the drawings are issued.

Leadership is geographically distributed rather than concentrated at headquarters. The CEO is based in San Antonio, while the President and COO, the CFO and most partners are in Houston, with additional partners in Dallas and Austin. The leadership page lists roughly 60 people, with a deep bench of licensed PEs plus LEED AP, CxA and BCxP credential holders.

Sustainability is framed in operating terms: minimizing carbon footprint across the HVAC, lighting and plumbing design and preserving non-renewable resources, rather than treated as a certification add-on.

The firm reports being named a Best Firm to Work For for a sixth consecutive year in a July 2026 post. It also publishes project insights, including a piece on the Metrocare Hillside Campus, and runs a continuing education program plus a client survey through its site.
