A Bit About University of North Georgia STEM Excellence Center — Dahlonega

The University of North Georgia has been adding STEM majors faster than it can seat them. On July 7, 2026, JE Dunn Construction joined university leaders, students and faculty in Dahlonega to break ground on the fix: a 53,214-square-foot STEM Excellence Center on the university’s flagship campus.

Project Scope

The building is programmed around flexible learning environments rather than fixed departmental labs. That means teaching labs that can be reconfigured between disciplines, shared instrumentation space, and collaboration areas placed to push chemistry, biology, engineering and computing students into the same rooms. UNG’s stated goal is hands-on, interdisciplinary instruction, and the floor plan follows from it.

Dahlonega’s terrain is a real constraint. The campus sits in the Blue Ridge foothills at about 1,500 feet, and site work on sloped ground with shallow granite is where schedule risk lives on a project this size. JE Dunn is delivering under the University System of Georgia’s capital process, which puts the Board of Regents in the owner’s seat.

At roughly 53,000 square feet, this is a mid-size academic building, not a research tower. That’s the point. The program is undergraduate-first, and the budget reflects a teaching mission rather than a sponsored-research one.

Why It Matters

Regional public universities are where most of the country’s STEM enrollment growth is actually happening, and they’re the least likely to have the lab space for it. UNG enrolls roughly 20,000 students across five campuses and functions as one of six senior military colleges, so its graduates feed both civilian engineering and the officer pipeline. Lab capacity there has downstream effects that a headcount number doesn’t capture.

For contractors, the North Georgia higher-ed market has been quietly steady while the metro Atlanta institutional market chased larger, splashier work. Building System of Georgia projects means living with Board of Regents design standards, state procurement timelines and a bid environment where local subcontractor availability, not price, usually sets the schedule. JE Dunn has built a substantial Southeast education practice on exactly that kind of job.

The center is expected to serve as UNG’s front door for STEM recruiting once it opens.
