A Bit About Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
After more than a decade of stops and restarts, Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is closing in on opening day. The museum on Saadiyat Island is set to debut late in 2026 as the largest Guggenheim anywhere, an 80,000-square-meter complex that trades the museum’s usual white-box discipline for a cluster of cones drawn from the region’s wind-tower tradition.
Project Scope
The building holds 28 galleries across roughly 12,080 square meters of interior exhibition space, plus about 23,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition area, an unusual amount of programmable space outside the walls. Eleven cone-like structures rise over the galleries, doubling as entrances and as exhibition volumes in their own right.
Gehry’s scheme breaks the program into overlapping blocks rather than a single monolith, with the cones funneling daylight and air through the assembly. It sits at the northwestern tip of Saadiyat in a cultural district that also carries Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, so the design had to hold its own in heavy company.
Why It Matters
Abu Dhabi has spent years building a cultural quarter from scratch, and the Guggenheim is its most-delayed and most-watched piece. Opening it caps a long, expensive bet that world-class museums can anchor a tourism economy the way oil once did.
The project also slots into a broader emirate push that keeps awarding ambitious, design-driven work on tight calendars, from Saadiyat’s institutions to the Zayed National Museum next door. For Gehry’s office, a 28-gallery building under the desert sun is a fitting late-career test. The opening will show whether the wind-tower cones perform as architecture or just photograph well.
