Windsor-Essex has broken ground on its long-planned new acute-care hospital. The Fancsy Family Hospital held its groundbreaking on July 16, with a two-million-square-foot campus meant to pull the region’s acute services under one roof and add more than 100 beds.
Project Scope
Windsor Regional Hospital is the owner. Diamond Schmitt leads the planning and design, and EllisDon is construction manager. Phase 1 covers a three-storey education and administrative centre, a simulation centre, a 700-vehicle parking garage, and the site infrastructure that a campus this size needs before the main hospital rises. A $202 million provincial commitment funds the early work.
Why It Matters
Windsor has waited years for a consolidated hospital, and getting shovels in the ground is the milestone that turns a plan into a build. The phased approach, infrastructure and support buildings first, is standard for hospital campuses of this scale, where the acute-care tower depends on parking, utilities and logistics being ready around it. For the region, it’s the largest healthcare construction project in a generation.
