A trench can bury a worker in seconds. That’s the blunt fact behind this week’s Trench Safety Stand-Down, the National Utility Contractors Association’s annual push that runs June 15 through 19 and asks crews to stop work, talk through excavation hazards, and check their protective systems before someone gets hurt.
The event leans on a number that hasn’t moved enough: cave-in protection is still the most-cited reason OSHA writes up a trenching violation. A cubic yard of soil weighs about as much as a small car. When a wall lets go, there’s no outrunning it, and rescue often turns into recovery.
What OSHA actually requires in a trench
The rule is not complicated. Any excavation five feet deep or more needs a protective system, sloping the walls back, shoring them, or dropping in a trench box, unless the cut is entirely in stable rock. Below five feet, a competent person still has to evaluate the conditions. The violations pile up not because the standard is vague but because the box gets skipped to save a few minutes.
