Concrete and copper get the headlines, but the material most likely to stall a project right now doesn’t pour or bend. It’s the transformer. Lead times for general units have stretched to about 150 weeks, and the biggest substation transformers can run past four years from order to delivery.
How bad the queue is
The numbers are stark. Large substation power transformers and generator step-up units are quoted at 120 to 210 weeks. Even humble distribution transformers, the ones on the pole outside, now run 80 to 100-plus weeks against a pre-pandemic baseline of 20 to 26. Manufacturers are pouring billions into new plants, but the backlog keeps growing because demand keeps climbing faster than the lines can ramp.
Blame the buildout
Two things are draining the supply at once: an aging grid that needs replacement gear, and a data center wave that needs enormous new electrical infrastructure. A single hyperscale campus can order transformer capacity that would have served a mid-sized utility a decade ago. Projects like the Stargate campus in Saline Township, Michigan, planned for more than a gigawatt, sit at the front of that queue and don’t leave much room behind them.
What it does to a schedule
When the long pole in the tent is a three-year transformer, the whole sequence bends around it. Owners are ordering gear before design is finished, paying to hold factory slots, and in some cases buying used units at a premium. The knock-on effect reaches everyone: a developer who can’t energize a finished building is burning capital on an asset that can’t earn. Until factory capacity catches up, the electrical long-lead list is where schedules live and die.
