Steel plate prices took two $60-a-ton increases in three business days. Nucor told customers on the evening of Oct. 1 that it’s raising plate by $60 per short ton as it opens its November order book. SSAB Americas followed Monday with a letter setting an increase of at least $60 on base plate, according to Steel Market Update.
Neither mill left much room to buy ahead.
The Dates That Decide Which Steel Plate Price You Pay
Nucor’s letter says November orders must be submitted by Oct. 23 to be considered, SMU reported. SSAB’s increase applies to all new spot orders confirmed to ship on or after Nov. 1. For a fabricator, that means plate not already booked for October shipment is effectively repriced now.
Tube got there first. Nucor Tubular Products advised customers on Sept. 29 that HSS, mechanical tube and piling products were up $100 a ton, effective immediately, as substrate costs kept climbing.
That substrate is hot-rolled coil, and it hasn’t paused. Nucor’s weekly consumer spot price for hot-rolled rose another $10 on Oct. 5 to $1,230 a ton, with California Steel Industries at $1,290. The same number was $1,185 on Aug. 31. That’s $45 in five weeks, delivered in steps small enough to miss.
Plate Lead Times Are at a Record
Price is half the problem. SMU’s buyer survey, published Oct. 1, found mill lead times still stretching for sheet and plate, with plate at a record high and nearly every product the publication tracks at its longest since 2021. A companion survey found the overwhelming majority of buyers still describe mills as inflexible on price.
SMU has attributed the plate squeeze to improved demand and higher import barriers, with fall mill outages making it worse. On Oct. 2 it also reported that the Commerce Department expects dumping to resume at significant margins if duties on cut-to-length plate from China and Russia were revoked. Offshore relief isn’t close.
This is the second leg of a story we’ve been tracking. In September we covered steel lead times doubling to 55 weeks, and Census data showed total steel imports down 19.6% while structural shapes and rebar went the other way.
What a $60 Plate Increase Means on a Bid
Plate goes into bridge girders, tanks, base plates, connection material and built-up sections. HSS is in most braced frames and canopies. On a job carrying a few hundred tons of each, $60 and $100 a ton is real money without being a budget-breaker.
The exposure is in the calendar. Fabricator quotes expire before the mill order gets placed, and long lead times push delivery past the dates the price was built on.
So ask your fabricator which mill order book your plate is actually in. Check whether the subcontract has a steel escalation clause and which index it points to. And confirm how long the quote in your hand is actually good for on anything with plate or HSS in it.
Announced mill increases don’t always stick. With lead times at a record and buyers reporting no give on price, this round has better odds than most. Nucor’s order deadline is Oct. 23.
