Abu Dhabi just put a number on its answer to Las Vegas. The Department of Culture and Tourism awarded ALEC a $1.7 billion letter of award for Sphere Abu Dhabi, the immersive entertainment venue headed for Yas Island, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2029.
ALEC’s contracting arm takes the full design, procurement, and construction scope. That’s a single-responsibility build for a structure whose entire point is its skin and its interior, a spherical shell wrapped in programmable LED outside and a wraparound display inside. Getting those two systems to behave is most of the engineering, and bundling design with construction is how the owner is trying to keep that from going sideways.
What the Sphere Abu Dhabi contract covers
The deal is design-procure-build, so ALEC owns the outcome from drawings through handover. For a venue this geometry-driven, that structure matters. The exosphere cladding and the interior media plane aren’t finishes bolted onto a frame at the end; they drive the structure, the MEP, and the acoustics from day one. One contractor holding all of it removes the seams where this kind of project usually slips.
Yas Island already carries Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and Yas Waterworld, so the Sphere lands inside an entertainment cluster with the roads, power, and hospitality to feed it. The site logic is straightforward: put the new anchor where the visitors already are.
How it fits Abu Dhabi’s building boom
The award sits alongside a deep cultural and tourism pipeline, from the Zayed National Museum to the long list of Saadiyat institutions. The emirate keeps signing big, design-forward contracts on tight calendars, and it keeps handing them to firms that can carry a whole megaproject end to end.
The schedule is the thing to watch. Q3 2029 is ambitious for a structure with this much custom fabrication and a display system that has exactly one full-scale precedent. The Las Vegas original ran over budget and past its first dates. Abu Dhabi has seen the first movie. Whether that changes the ending is the question worth following.
