Nearly 10,000 construction workers, two years, three buildings, 1.2 million square feet. Microsoft announced June 23 that its first Fairwater data center facility in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin is complete and fully operational — ahead of schedule, which is not a phrase the data center sector hears often at this scale.
What Fairwater’s completion says about data center construction
The roughly $3.3 billion first phase started bringing equipment online in April, with construction wrapping formally in June. The two-story building design is the notable construction story: stacking the data halls doubled compute density per acre and changed everything downstream, from structural loads to how the closed-loop liquid cooling gets distributed. About 550 full-time staff now run the site.
Microsoft president Brad Smith called the campus home to “the world’s most powerful supercomputer.” Worth flagging: no TOP500 benchmark has been filed, and the June list, published a day after the announcement, ranked China’s LineShine system first. The machine links hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs over an 800-gigabit Ethernet fabric co-developed with OpenAI and NVIDIA — enormous by any measure, but “most powerful” is a marketing claim until it’s benchmarked.
Mount Pleasant, from Foxconn cautionary tale to AI hub
There’s a redemption arc in the address. This is the same Racine County site where Foxconn’s promised LCD campus mostly failed to materialize. The infrastructure built for that project — power, water, graded land — is a big part of why Microsoft could move this fast. Wisconsin’s stranded site turned out to be pre-positioned for the AI buildout.
The completion also lands as data center construction runs at $58 billion for the year while most other nonresidential work stalls. Fairwater is the pattern in miniature: the projects driving construction employment right now are a handful of enormous, schedule-driven campuses in secondary markets.
More capacity is already moving
Microsoft has committed to additional Fairwater facilities on the site and continues buildouts across its portfolio. For the trades, the signal is straightforward: the firm just proved it can deliver a gigawatt-class AI facility in two years in a Midwest winter climate, and it plans to do it again. Electricians in southeast Wisconsin will not be short of work this decade.
