Meta Pushes Hyperion to 5 Gigawatts and a $50 Billion Price Tag

Meta just made its largest data center a lot larger. On July 13 the company confirmed that Hyperion, its campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, will grow to 5 gigawatts of capacity and cost more than $50 billion. That’s about double the 2-gigawatt, $27 billion project Meta described last October alongside joint-venture partner Blue Owl Capital.

What the Hyperion expansion adds

The revised plan keeps the same site but stretches the timeline and the load. A Meta spokesperson told CNBC the campus should hit 2 GW by 2030, with the full 5 GW finished around 2032. Turner, DPR and Mortenson are handling construction, the same trio Meta has leaned on across its Louisiana and Indiana work. At 5 GW, Hyperion draws more electricity than some U.S. cities, which is why Entergy’s gas-plant plan and the parish’s water supply have become part of the project scope rather than a footnote to it.

Why the bigger data center matters

The jump says less about Meta’s AI ambitions, which were never in doubt, and more about where the bottleneck sits. Chips can be bought. Interconnection queues, turbines and cooling water can’t be conjured on the same schedule. Meta’s willingness to commit $50 billion to a single Louisiana campus signals that it would rather lock up power and land now than compete for both later. Local opposition is the wildcard. Communities near hyperscale sites have started pushing back hard on noise, water draws and tax abatements, and contractors are increasingly being asked to carry some of that risk. Meta’s nearby Prometheus supercluster in Ohio shows the same pattern at smaller scale. Whether 5 GW pencils out depends on how fast the grid can actually deliver.
