Buildots Just Put a Laser Scanner Inside Its Progress-Tracking AI

Contractors have owned laser scanners for a decade. The scans usually end up in a folder nobody opens until there’s a dispute.

Buildots announced on August 11 that it has pulled scanning into the platform that already tracks progress, through a partnership with reality-capture firm NavVis. The pitch isn’t the scanner. It’s that the same system flagging your schedule slip is now also checking whether the sleeve is where the model says it is.

Survey-grade data in the progress layer

Capture runs on NavVis VLX wearable and MLX handheld mobile mapping systems, or any laser scanner that outputs the industry-standard E57 format, so contractors aren’t locked into new hardware. The results are viewed inside Buildots through an embedded NavVis IVION viewer, sitting next to the 360-degree progress imagery and the BIM model rather than in a separate survey environment.

Buildots is aiming it squarely at data centers, semiconductor fabs and hospitals, the three building types where dimensional tolerance is a contractual matter and as-built accuracy has to be proven rather than assumed. It’s live for all customers now and already deployed on Intel’s global semiconductor fab construction portfolio.

“Construction intelligence is only as strong as the data feeding it,” said Roy Danon, Buildots CEO and co-founder. “Adding laser scans to Buildots brings a new, survey-grade data point into the platform, unifying it with progress and workforce data under one roof and enriching what our AI can analyze.”

Why fabs and hospitals, specifically

The economics only work where rework is expensive. On a warehouse, a penetration 40 millimeters out of place gets fixed by a laborer with a core drill. On a fab or a fill-finish suite, the same error can mean a cleanroom wall comes back down, and the recovery is measured in weeks against a validation schedule that owners will not move.

That’s the same risk profile driving pharmaceutical and semiconductor capital right now. Genentech more than doubled its investment in a 700,000-square-foot fill-finish campus in Holly Springs, North Carolina to roughly $2 billion, and every week of schedule on a project like that carries a real revenue number behind it.

The consolidation pattern

NavVis closed an $85 million Series D on August 6, five days before the Buildots announcement, led by The Jordan Company. Its boilerplate now claims more than two billion square meters of plants, sites and buildings held on IVION.

Read the two announcements together and the direction is clear enough. Progress-tracking platforms are absorbing reality capture, weeks after Procore paid $845 million for DroneDeploy. Buildots has been moving the same way on its own, adding superstructure tracking for the structural phase and folding the workforce-tracking technology from its Genda acquisition into a Buildots Field brand.

The open question is adoption in the field. A scanner that requires a dedicated survey walk still requires someone to walk it, and the projects most in need of the discipline are the ones running hardest. Vendors have been promising unified reality capture for years. This one at least ships with a named fab program behind it.
