A seawall is usually a slab of gray concrete doing one job: hold back the water. A Miami company wants it to do three. Kind Designs, which 3D-prints coastal seawalls that also work as artificial reefs, raised $10 million in Pre-Series A funding to scale up.
What it builds
The company’s “Living Seawalls” are printed with textured, root-like surfaces modeled on mangroves, giving oysters, barnacles and small fish somewhere to attach. The marine life that colonizes the wall filters the water around it, so a structure meant to stop erosion also nudges water quality in the right direction. Printing a panel takes hours instead of the days a conventional precast yard needs to form and cure one.
Why Florida is the test bed
South Florida has thousands of miles of aging bulkheads, many of them past their design life and facing higher water than they were built for. Replacing them is a slow, expensive slog, and the standard product does nothing for the ecosystem it displaced decades ago. A wall that installs faster and adds habitat is an easy story to tell a coastal city council staring at both a resilience mandate and an environmental one.
The climate-resilience angle is also why the money showed up. Investors have started treating shoreline protection as infrastructure worth funding, not charity. The same waterfront pressure shaping seawall demand is reshaping what gets built behind them, from elevated mechanicals to riverfront housing like the Southbank Residences rising on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville.
The open question
Novel infrastructure has to clear a durability bar before cities buy it at scale. A printed wall has to prove it holds up to storm surge and salt over decades, not seasons, and permitting agencies move cautiously on anything new in the water. Kind Designs has installations in the ground to point to, which is more than most climate-tech pitches can say. Whether it becomes the default or stays a boutique option depends on how the first walls weather the next few hurricane seasons.
