Located in the India Basin neighborhood of San Francisco, the SFMW shop is minutes away from the 101 and 280, and is 10 minutes from SFO. We can ship our products to anywhere in the world, and we have; our customers include designers in Australia, Europe and Canada. We have a team of talented fabricators, with their own individual strengths, who make up a great team that delivers quality work with a great attitude every day.

SF Metalworks is what one would call a custom shop. We enjoy the relationship that results from working one on one with a homeowner, designer, architect or someone who has a vision but doesn’t know how to execute it. We will develop a custom design for your metalwork or build from specifications provided by you or your design professional. Each project is approached individually and involves a plan tailored to your needs. We thrive in a collaborative environment and prefer open conversations about how we can best meet or exceed your expectations.

The Custer Avenue shop has been running since 2006, and the equipment list explains what kinds of jobs land there. A 5-axis waterjet and a long-bed router table each take flats up to 144 inches long, 60 inches wide and 5 inches thick. Alongside them sit a CNC lathe, a vertical CNC mill, a 240-ton press brake with a 12-foot bed, a 10-foot shear, an 80-ton angle roller and a 1500-watt handheld welding laser. A mobile CMM with a 59-foot range and accuracy of a thousandth of an inch per ten feet handles field measurement on large assemblies.

Ron Moore, a US Navy veteran, leads the company. Welders are AWS certified across SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW processes, and the shop adds laser and small stud welding to that mix. Finishing is done in house: powder coat, plating, aluminum anodize, patina, distressing, graining, stroke sanding, blasting, tumbling and stainless passivation after welding.

Material range runs well past mild steel. Stainless, Corten, aluminum, copper, bronze, brass, zinc and pewter are standard, with quotes available on exotics such as Inconel and titanium, and the shop regularly integrates wood, acrylic, polycarbonate, G10 and carbon fiber into metal assemblies.

Four markets account for most of the work. Architectural construction covers decorative and structural pieces from pewter countertops to complex stairways. Municipal work includes park signage, decorative traffic railings and underground water conveyance. Renewable energy and greentech clients draw on the shop’s ability to supply Build America, Buy America content certification and meet American Iron and Steel requirements on federally funded projects. Agricultural and food processing companies in Northern California use it for fast component fabrication and repair to keep production lines running.

Design support sits at the front of the process. Draftspeople work in AutoCAD, SolidWorks and SketchUp and can take a project from a rough sketch through to detailed mechanical drawings, with engineering analysis and prototyping available before anything is cut.
