Company history and shop capability
Alberto Ditta founded the business in 1975, starting in an 1,800-square-foot shop in Scarborough that mostly turned out staircases and railings. An early contract with Olympia & York on First Canadian Place put the shop in front of the GTA commercial market, and the work widened from there: institutional and school retrofits through the 1980s, malls and condominium towers in the 1990s, then structural steel and, more recently, structural restoration of heritage buildings. Paul Ditta joined his father in 1981 and still leads the company; Paul’s son Robert is the third generation now working in it.
Operations sit at 5 Stalwart Industry Drive in Gormley, north of Toronto, with roughly 60 tradespeople on the roster and more than 1,000 completed projects behind the company.
Recent work gives a fair picture of the scale range. Structural packages have gone to Sick Kids Hospital and the Marriott Eaton Centre with PCL, Galleria Blocks 2 and 5 with Clark Construction Management, Evergreen Brick Works and Golf Canada with Gillam, and the Amazon DON8 facility in Don Mills. Two scopes worth singling out: temporary steel holding a historic waterfront facade in place during the LCBO Block 4 build for Menkes, and the curved rooftop canopy crowning Galleria Block 2, which was contracted separately from the tower steel.
Detailing, connection engineering coordination, estimating, project management and fabrication are handled in-house, and erection is performed by the company’s own Ironworkers Local 721 crews rather than a subcontracted erector, so one party carries the scope from shop drawing to turnover. The company is a member of the Ontario Erectors Association and the Residential Architectural Metals Association.
Smaller architectural work still runs through the same shop: a steel feature stair with white oak treads, polished stainless handrails paired with glass balustrades, welded stringers with integrated LED detailing. Estimators will also price supply-only packages of fabricated steel for general contractors and erectors who self-perform installation. Enquiries go to 905.888.5511 or info@cultironworks.com.
