Grass Roots Pond & Garden

Building a koi-friendly system starts with layout, depth, and how water will circulate through filters and streams. Koi pond construction in New Boston, MI often includes underlayment, an EPDM liner, biological filtration, and aeration to support clear water and healthy oxygen levels. Skimmer placement and service access are planned so vacuums, nets, and test gear can reach the pond without disturbing plant beds or stonework. Seasonal care plays a role as well; scheduling pond cleaning and maintenance in Monroe, MI typically lines up with spring startup and fall leaf drop to manage debris before it compacts. Grass Roots Pond & Garden services established ponds by clearing sludge from basins and streambeds, flushing lines, and checking pump flow, lights, and fittings. When problems arise—such as string algae, low circulation, or weeping edges—technicians trace the cause before recommending repairs. For spaces where a full basin isn’t practical, fountainscapes can provide moving water and lighting accents for entries, patios, and courtyards.

Grass Roots has been in the pond business since 1973 and family-owned the whole way, past fifty years now, working from 24765 Bell Road in New Boston. The count on the homepage is more than 400 ponds built.

What separates the operation from a landscape contractor that also does water features is the retail side. There is an actual shop, stocked with koi, butterfly koi, shubunkins, comets and tadpoles, along with liners, Aquascape skimmers, biofalls and waterfall pumps. The aquatic and perennial plants, including water lilies, water hyacinth, water lettuce, lotus and flowering cannas, are grown on site rather than trucked in from a wholesaler, which is the company’s stated reason they arrive healthy.

The property itself carries display ponds with fish you can hand-feed. That is a more useful way to choose a waterfall than looking at photographs of someone else’s garden.

The company is Aquascape Certified, and the build side covers pond construction, pondless waterfalls, fountainscapes, repairs, and seasonal cleaning and maintenance. Financing for water-feature projects runs through Enhancify.

Service reaches out from New Boston across Wayne, Monroe, Macomb, Oakland and Washtenaw counties, with Northville and Ann Arbor called out specifically.

The stated values are short: family first, quality is everything, integrity. Shop hours run Monday to Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 9 to 4 and Sunday noon to 4, seasonally, so it is worth checking the Google listing before driving out in the off-season.
