The company traces back further than 1981. Joe Moran started American Lawn Sprinkler that year while still working full-time as a journeyman pipefitter at General Dynamics’ Warren Tank Plant, running the business at night for around five years. The customer base grew when he took over the accounts of Sprinkler System Service, founded in 1968 by Bryce Reynolds, after Reynolds died in about 1986. The business incorporated in March 1988 and built its own office and warehouse on eighteen acres in Dryden in the summer of 1990, doing much of that construction in-house.

The second generation is now running it. Brian Moran started on the clean-up crew in 1995 at the age of twelve, graduated from Western Michigan University in 2005, and became president in May 2010. The company says roughly ninety-five percent of new business still comes from customer referrals.

A detail that decides whether a job is even feasible: they install on municipal supply, private wells, and water drawn from lakes, ponds and streams. Well installations are designed around well depth, static water level, pump horsepower and pump depth rather than assuming a standard pressure. Heads are commercial grade from Rain Bird and Hunter, and the company claims a role in developing and testing the Extra Flow product.

Installation itself is less disruptive than most homeowners expect, because pipe is pulled underground with equipment designed not to tear up established turf, leaving a narrow blade cut.

The fleet is radio dispatched and GPS enabled. Coverage runs across Lapeer, Genesee, St. Clair, Oakland and Macomb counties. Off-season, the same crews install Christmas lighting, and the site publishes its own detailed spring start-up and winterizing procedures, which is unusually open for the trade.
