Joe Pierce was 25 when he started the company in 2002, working out of a worn-out car with a ladder, a hammer and a box of nails. The legal entity is still Precision Roofing & Exterior Renovations, LLC, and the customer list has widened since then to cover ordinary homeowners, high-end residences and commercial buildings.

The manufacturer credentials are the part worth reading closely. Precision Roofing is a GAF Certified Contractor, which is what allows it to issue GAF’s 50-year, one-time-transferable labor and material warranty rather than a shop warranty backed only by the contractor. It also holds CertainTeed’s Certified ShingleMaster designation and is a certified VELUX skylight installer, so skylight work does not get subcontracted out to a third party mid-roof.

Coverage runs south and west from the Springvale office at 554 Main Street. York County is the core, taking in Sanford, Springvale, Shapleigh, Biddeford, Saco, Kennebunk, Wells, York and Old Orchard Beach, and the crews also travel north to Scarborough and Portland and out to the Sebago Lakes area. Work carries across the state line into Dover, Rochester, Somersworth, Wakefield and Effingham in New Hampshire.

On process: estimates can be done the same day, and the consultation walks through colour and material selection before anything is ordered. A foreman is assigned to every job site, and the company puts a typical residential roof at two to three days start to finish. Crews will take on repairs to roofs another contractor installed, and roof inspections for real estate closings are routine work rather than an exception.

Two details set this business apart from most roofers its size. It selects suppliers that have reduced and offset their carbon footprint to reach carbon-neutral status, which is an unusual procurement position for a small residential contractor. And it arranges roofing loans through national lenders, where pre-qualification can be checked without affecting a credit score and the loans carry no prepayment penalty. The office is staffed by a person, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm.
