Hartman Walsh Painting Company is an industrial coatings and protective-coatings contractor established in St. Louis in 1950, also trading as Hartman Walsh Industrial Services. It works across chemical, oil and gas, power and government markets in the United States and Canada, and reports more than 5,000 completed jobs.

The scope is heavier than the name suggests. Beyond industrial painting, the firm does tank coatings and linings, penstock repair and rehabilitation on hydroelectric assets, spray-in-place pipe lining, lead abatement, and cementitious and intumescent fireproofing, with abrasive and ultra-high-pressure surface preparation in-house. Power sector work spans nuclear, hydroelectric, geothermal, coal and steam-fired and wind. Federal clients include the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense. Hartman Walsh holds the full SSPC/AMPP certification set, QP-1, QP-2, QP-8 and QS-1, runs NACE CIP trained staff and a full-time corporate safety director, and publishes a three-year average EMR of 0.74 with a total recordable rate of 0.58. It is a subcontractor on the Uranium Processing Facility at Y-12 in Oak Ridge.

What the certification alphabet actually covers.

AMPP QP1 verifies that Hartman Walsh can carry out surface preparation and industrial coating application in the field on complex industrial structures. QP2 covers hazardous paint removal in the field. QP8 covers polymer coatings and surfacing applied to concrete and other cementitious surfaces. QS-1 verifies a quality management system that meets ISO 9001 and AMPP standards. The firm’s own quality program is described as ISO 9001 compliant and aligned with nuclear safety culture standards, with a site-specific plan developed for each project and performance incentives tied to quality outcomes.

Field crews complete OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour training. Alongside the incident rates the company already publishes, its three-year average lost time incident rate is 0.40.

Pipe and penstock work is the largest single line. Hartman Walsh applies protective epoxies inside large and small diameter pipe using robotics, and reports $200 million in completed projects with $100 million in backlog on that service. Spray-in-place pipe lining is the trenchless version of the same approach: a robotic system coats the inside of an existing pipeline so the line does not have to be excavated to be rehabilitated. Tank work spans water, chemical and fuel storage tanks as well as process vessels, with sandblasting and other surface preparation handled ahead of the coating.

Fireproofing runs as two distinct systems, intumescent and cementitious, applied to structural steel across industrial facilities, manufacturing plants and commercial buildings. On the tank side the point of the coating and lining work is durability against corrosion, which is why surface preparation is treated as part of the scope rather than a preliminary, and why each job is specified to the vessel rather than to a standard package.
