PHNX Materials

PHNX Materials is a materials processing company working to refine coal combustion byproducts into saleable products, principally cement-grade fly ash for concrete, along with critical minerals and fertilizer. The company operates a pilot plant in Ohio and laboratory facilities in California. Its Jupiter pilot, scheduled to open in September 2026 on the grounds of the former Eastlake coal power plant on Lake Erie, is a 200 to 300 square foot demonstration unit running for six months to a year, developed with a $1,976,635 award from the Ohio Department of Development and with Industrial Development Advantage as property partner. Fly ash supply has tightened as coal generation has retired.

PHNX frames the problem before the product, and the framing is a supply chain argument rather than an environmental one. China controls the metals that underpin the modern economy, and in 2024 it banned gallium and germanium exports to the United States. Gallium, germanium and silicon are required in every semiconductor, every 5G system and every advanced weapon, and by the company’s account domestic production of them is currently nil.

The second half of the argument explains why new mines are not the answer. Gallium is a byproduct of aluminium refining and germanium a byproduct of zinc smelting, and the United States no longer operates aluminium or zinc industries at the scale those byproducts depend on. Rebuilding primary industry to recover them would take capital expenditure the company treats as prohibitive, and the timeline would run past the point of need. Its stated position is blunt: the supply crisis is now, not 2035.

That leads to the actual business. Rather than mining, PHNX extracts from what has already been mined. Billions of tons of industrial byproducts sit across America carrying the same metals currently imported, and the company refines those waste streams into products for the semiconductor, building materials and agriculture industries.

The commercial pitch runs in two directions at once. For the holders of the waste streams, the offer is turning an environmental liability into revenue. For the building materials side, the case is carbon: every ton of cement displaced by the company’s material avoids the CO2 that would have been emitted producing it. That dual position is what lets a critical-minerals story and a concrete supply story sit in the same company.

Operations are split between a pilot plant in Ohio and laboratories in California, and the company is recruiting engineers, operators and builders across both.
