Goodwin Living is a not-for-profit senior living and healthcare organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. It was established in 1967 through the Episcopal Church, on donated land given on the condition that a continuing care retirement community be built there. It now runs Goodwin House Alexandria, Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads, The View Alexandria and Forest Hills of D.C., along with home health, hospice, rehabilitation, home care and an aging-at-home program. The organization reports more than 1,450 team members and says it serves about 5,000 older adults a day in the region. Goodwin Living broke ground Oct. 7, 2026, on Goodwin House Seminary Road, a two-tower, 257-unit community designed by Perkins Eastman and built by Clark Construction. Opening is planned for 2029.
Goodwin Living is a not-for-profit organisation, and its programmes extend well past the five campuses. Its headquarters is at 4800 Fillmore Avenue in Alexandria.
StrongerMemory, the brain health programme run through Goodwin Brain Health, has reached 58,000 participants and is available nationwide rather than only to residents. Goodwin Living Foundation, established in 1989, funds work including music therapy and animal therapy programmes.
The workforce side of the organisation is unusual enough to be worth describing. Team members come from more than 65 countries, and the Citizenship Program has helped more than 200 of them become U.S. citizens; the organisation also publishes a guide on launching such a programme for other employers. More than 95 interns have come through, and benefits include clinical student loan repayment and tuition assistance. Clinical Pastoral Education is offered as a formal training track, as is brain health and dementia training. Recognition follows: Washington Post Top Workplace in the Washington area for seven consecutive years of competition, a consistent placement inside the top 13 organisations receiving Top Workplaces USA designation, and 2026 Top Workplaces listings for nursing, the Washington Post and USA Today.
Eligibility differs by service line, which is the practical thing to know before calling. Senior living is for adults 55 and up in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. The healthcare services, by contrast, are open to anyone 18 and up. Goodwin Home Health is Medicare-certified, and outpatient rehabilitation covers physical, occupational and speech therapy, including LSVT therapy for people with Parkinson’s disease. Goodwin Living At Home operates as a membership programme across Virginia and D.C. for people who intend to stay in their own homes.
Amenities at the communities include heated pools with in-water aerobic instruction, and the campuses are pet-friendly. The organisation describes itself as faith-based, with a mission framed around older adults and the people who care for them.
