The company behind Star Ready to Move Homes goes back to 1952, when Star Building Materials began sourcing lumber for Manitoba builders. Ready-to-move homes came roughly thirty years ago, after it became clear that not just Manitoba but Western Canada saw value in the quality-per-dollar the format allows.

Where an RTM buyer usually gets caught out is the division of responsibility, and the company is direct about it. Star builds from the joist level upward. Everything below that – the foundation, whether full basement or crawl space – is the homeowner’s to arrange with their own contractor, along with the driveway and any tree clearing needed to get the home onto the site. A specification list is provided so the remaining scope is visible before anyone commits.

There is a hard geographic limit worth knowing: RTM homes cannot be transported within the city of Winnipeg. A home going up inside city limits has to be built on-site instead. It has been done, usually on the outskirts or in open areas inside the perimeter, and those builds typically sit on a full basement.

Stock models are held in inventory, with some available in as little as a month. Current plans run from the Savona at 1,166 square feet through the Princeton at 1,064, River Rock at 1,148, Red Rock at 1,348, New Evening Calm at 1,358 with three bedrooms and two baths, and the Special Edition Kalleigh at 1,476. Several can be toured through 360-degree walkthroughs before a site visit.
