Rockwell Group

Rockwell Group is an architecture and design practice founded in New York City in 1984 by David Rockwell. The firm works across hospitality, restaurants, theater and set design, cultural projects and workplace interiors, with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Madrid. Hospitality is the largest part of the practice, and its theatrical background shows up in interiors organized around sightlines and sequence rather than plan efficiency alone. Rockwell Group handled interior design for the Fairmont New Orleans at 1010 Common, a 250-key hotel occupying 18 floors of a 1971 Skidmore, Owings & Merrill tower listed on the National Register, opening in November 2026.

Architecture and interiors are only one of four bodies of work the studio publishes. Theater is a separate practice, Products is another, and the Lab merges story, architecture, and technology into immersive experiences, interactive experiences, and content design. That structure is deliberate; the same team that details a restaurant also designs sets and consumer products.

Leadership and locations are straightforward. The firm was founded in 1984 by David Rockwell and is led by partners Shawn Sullivan and Greg Keffer. The New York studio is at 5 Union Square West; Los Angeles is at 757 S. Alameda Street; Madrid is at Calle Montalban 7. The legal entity is Rockwell Architecture, Planning and Design, P.C.

The typology range is unusually wide for a single practice. Published project categories include cultural, education, event, exhibition and environmental graphics, hotel and resort, nightlife and entertainment, public work, residential, restaurant, sport, transportation, wellness, and workplace. Work is filed under North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa.

The studio also publishes. Four books are listed: Drama, which sets out David Rockwell’s principles across architecture and theater; What If…?; Spectacle, written with Bruce Mau on the history of communal public performance; and Pleasure, an examination of the firm’s design strategy. Recent studio announcements include the Skywalker Grill at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Internal infrastructure gets its own front door on the contact page, which is a small signal of how the practice operates. There is a named chief development officer for new business, a chief marketing and communications officer handling press, a dedicated product development inbox, separate career contacts for the New York and Los Angeles offices versus Madrid, and a resource librarian running the material library. The firm’s own summary of its motivation is curiosity, described as what keeps it open to possibilities for clients and for itself.
