Herman F. Wohlsen founded Wohlsen Construction Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1890, and the firm has stayed in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast ever since, working across Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and Connecticut. It became 100 percent employee-owned through an ESOP in 2023 and reports roughly $900 million in annual construction volume, placing it on ENR’s Top 400 list. Services cover preconstruction, general construction, construction management, design-build, in-house MEP and a special projects group. Work concentrates in senior living, healthcare, higher education, cultural and commercial buildings. Recent projects include the Lancaster Amtrak station renewal and flood hardening at the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art, where Wohlsen is now in joint venture with Turner on the museum’s campus expansion.
