Thompson Turner Construction

Thompson Turner Construction is a South Carolina general contractor headquartered on North Main Street in Sumter, operating as part of Thompson Construction Group, Inc. The firm builds across athletic facilities, commercial, healthcare, higher education, hospitality, industrial, K-12 education, public and government work, senior living, site work and special projects, and states that about 90% of its volume comes from repeat clients. It was the general contractor on Greenville Technical College’s $32 million Center for Welding and Automation Excellence in Simpsonville, a 44,000-square-foot training building that opened in August 2026 and quadrupled the college’s robotic welding capacity. Education and workforce-training facilities have become a steady line of work for the firm across the Carolinas.

K-12 campuses make up a large and specifically named share of the portfolio: Philip Simmons High School, Boiling Springs High School, the Brookland-Cayce High School stadium and arena, Carolina Park Elementary, Sullivan’s Island Elementary, Tyger River Elementary, East Edisto Middle School, South Lake Elementary, the Wellford Academy of Science and Technology, the CTE Innovation Center, the Poyner School of Healthcare Innovation, and multi-site capital improvement programs for Beaufort schools and Lexington-Richland 5. Much of that work lands on campuses that stay open, and the firm also runs feasibility studies to help districts decide whether an existing building is worth renovating or should be replaced.

Outside schools, Thompson Turner cites experience with convention centers, judicial complexes, regional transit facilities and nuclear power plant projects, which puts complex building systems rather than shell-and-core work at the center of its resume.

How a project is bought matters here. The company says it pioneered construction manager at-risk delivery for public sector construction in South Carolina, and it also runs design-bid-build, design-build, integrated project delivery and virtual design and construction. Preconstruction is treated as its own discipline: detailed take-off procedures, every scope taken to market for accurate pricing, and a deliberately conservative approach to early estimates. Accounting is open-book, and the firm states it has delivered both preconstruction savings and additional construction savings under a Guaranteed Maximum Price on every project to date.

Self-performance backs that up. Thompson Turner holds licenses in grading, utilities, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and process piping, and self-performs civil, concrete and masonry scopes. Architectural and planning services, including technical drawings and documentation, are available in-house as well.

On safety, dedicated safety personnel visit each job site weekly, and every employee, subcontractor and subcontractor employee is empowered to stop any work judged unsafe.

Four South Carolina offices carry the work: the Sumter headquarters at 100 North Main Street, Columbia on Henderson Street, Greenville at 75 Beattie Place, and Mt. Pleasant on Coleman Boulevard. The division sits inside Thompson Construction Group, whose other arms cover industrial maintenance, power services, fabrication and site work.
